Casa Caletas Rain Forest Rural Inn – In Carbon 2

Casa Caletas is a Caribbean-style jungle lodge located in the evergreen mountains of Talamanca. It offers splendid views and great for bird watching, especially during the fall raptor migration. Delicious food, personal attention and community conservation efforts make a wonderful place to stay.

How to get there: San José – Limón – Cahuita. Three kilometers beyond the entrance to Cahuita, turn right at bus stop and follow a road 2.5 km until you see the sign for Casa Caletas. Turn right at the sign and go another 800 m to the inn (4WD required).

El Yüe Rural Inn and Tropical Flower Tour – In Hone Creek near Puerto Viejo

Those drawn to sustainable practices, a family-style environment and tropical flowers will enjoy these comfortable bungalows surrounded by gardens, medical plants and organic bananas. Close to Puerto Viejo and Cahuita this is an excellent base for exploring Talamanca.

How to get there: San José – Limón – Hone Creek. Drive 2.5 km past the Hone Creek School on a road to the community of Carbon I, where you’ll see the sign for El Yüe on your right.

Stibrawpa Lodge and Chocolate Tour – Boat tour starts 45 minutes away from Puerto Viejo

The adventure begins with an exciting trip in a dugout canoe down the Río Yorkín. Once in the village of Yorkín, visit organic banana and cacao plantations while learning about Bribri customs. Bathe in the river and then learn how chocolate is made from the seeds of cacao pod. Enjoy a delicious traditional lunch and learn how this inspiring community is preserving Bribri culture. In the afternoon, return to the coast or stay overnight at Casa de las Mujeres.

How to get there: San José – Hone Creek. Turn right in Hone Creek instead of going straight to Puerto Viejo. Follow the road to the town of Bribri. Turn left at the Colegio Agropecuario and drive 10 km to Bambú, where your local river guide will be waiting for you.

Kekoldi Bird Observation Center and Lodge – Between Hone Creek and Puerto Viejo

The members of the Kekoldi Wa Ka Koneke Association give you the opportunity to share their customs, their cooking, their myths and stories. Learn about their work to protect the endangered green iguana. In the fall, observe the raptor migrations from their birding tower. Return to the coast at night, or stay over at their canopy level lodge.

How to get there: Take the road to Puerto Viejo 800m beyond the Hone Creek / Bribri turnoff to the Abastecedor El Cruce. Turn right and go 400m to the entrance of the Kekoldi Reserve.

Gandoca Rural Inn and Turtle Tour – About an hour and half south of Puerto Viejo

Enjoy the beach, search for leatherback turtles laying their eggs at night (March to June), visit Gandoca lagoon and mangroves, and observe a great variety of native and migratory birds in the Gandoca / Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge. Spend the night at Albergue El Yolillal or with local families, if you wish return to Puerto Viejo or Cahuita.

How to get there: San José – Limón – Cahuita. On the road to Puerto Viejo, turn right at Hone Creek and continue to the town of Bribri. In Bribri follow the road to Sixaola for 29 km. Turn left at the sign for Gandoca and continue 14 km on a road to the beach.

La Casona Tortuguero Lodge and Turtle Tour

Explore Tortuguero National Park while experience life in Tortuguero village. Located in the heart of the village and only 50 meters from the beach La Casona is a family lodge and restaurant. Rooms are surrounded by flowers and shrubs, giving it a peaceful atmosphere.

How to get there: By car and boat San José –Guápiles – Cariari – Cuatro Esquinas – Finca Palacios – La Pavona. There you leave your car in a guard parking and take the boat to Tortuguero.
